Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the USA and was very involved with the civil war. He was first elected because of his debate with Douglas. He was elected fro two terms. Lincoln was strongly against war like he was with slavery and the states having to much power but thought war was the only way to protect the Union. Things he is remebered for are The Gettysberg Adress, Emancipation Proclaimation, being assinated, two inagural speeches, and for giving moving speeches. "We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." This is a quote from Lincoln.
Jefferson Davis
Davis was considered a war hero in the west and was the president of the confederate states. At first he wanted to be a war general and didnt want to be president. He was elected though because he was easily influenced. When states tried to determine new laws for new country he argued against it. He was elected good leader of the army. He ran the army poorly though because he argued with generals. He admitted defeat by running. He was caught and tried for treason in 1866. He was let go in 1868. This is a quote from Davis, "If the confederacy fails, there should be written on its tombstone, Died of a theory."
Robert E. Lee
Robert Lee was a great general in the civil war. Lee opposed the idea of secession for his home state of Virginia. However he declined Lincoln's offer to become union general. Lee was well repected and admired by his men. He was also a great motivator for his troops. Lee's victories were the Seven Day Battle, Second Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. His turning point of the war was the terrible loss for him at Gettysberg. He finally surrendered at Appomattox court house."It is well that war is so terrible, lest we should grow too fond of it." this is a quote from Lee.
Ulysses S. Grant
Grant was known as a great civil war general. Some of the battles he won were Forts Henry and Donnelson, Vicksburg, and gained directed another union general (sherman) south while he and his union army of the Potomac marched to Richmond. The goal was of the march was to pin down the confederate general, Robert Lee, and control the confederate capital. On April 9, 1865 Lee surrendered at the Appomattox court house in richmond. Grant made sure Lee would ot be tried for prison. A quote from Grant during the civil war is ," In every battle there comes a time when both sides consider themselves beaten, then he who continues the attack wins."
